COMMUNITIES IN THE VALLEY

Concept
Communities in the Valley, Ecologies of the Estuary:
a symbiotic approach for sea level rise
This project examines Tung Chung river valley and bay, an area adjacent to Hong Kong’s International Airport threated by development, sea level and climate change. The valley is still intact, containing high ecological, hydrological and cultural values. The natural estuary is composed wetlands, mudflat, mangroves and sea grass habitats and the formal agricultural valley has vanishing villages and abandoned agricultural plots. However, the government’s plan for Tung Chung New Town Extension in 2024 will impact the existing ecologies of the area by increasing densities, reclaiming the natural coastal edge and neglecting cultural landscape of the site.
